Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has asked all mobile operators to restrict promotion of pornographic and vulgar contents through mobile phones and social media sites or to block all websites in question on an urgent basis, reports Dhaka Tribune.
The telecom regulator instructed all mobile operators, Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) operators, International Internet Gateway (IIG) operators and internet service providers (ISPs) to act immediately. System and Services Division of the BTRC gave the directives on June 30 with reference to a High Court order dated May 10.
The operators have been asked to take necessary steps to prevent uploading and sending of porn videos, vulgar images, animations and conversations via mobile phones, Facebook, Twitter etc, and simultaneously blocking all such websites. The BTRC letter, however, did not give any appropriate definition for pornography.
Mahmud Hossain, chief corporate affairs officer of Grameenphone, told the Dhaka Tribune that they would comply with the order within the stipulated time.
Ekram Kabir, vice-president of Robi Axiata limited, echoed Mahmud and said that such action would be good for the society.
The High Court order came in response to a petition.
