BAPA to stage demo against NTPC-BPDB’s Rampal power plant

Press Release: Please see the quoted part of the news published recently in an English daily news paper of Bangladesh on the Rampal Thermal Power Station, Bagerhat:

“The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has accepted the terms and conditions of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) of India for installing a 1,320 megawatts coal-fired power plant in Rampal in the southern part of the country. Having failed to reach any conclusion over the one-year-long negotiation with the NTPC, the BPDB has been compelled to accept all the terms and conditions of the NTPC as the offer remains ‘lucrative,’ according to BPDB sources”.

It indicates the desperate mind set of Bangladesh Government regarding the establishment of the proposed Thermal Power Station at Rampal, Bagerhat. We had been in a struggle for last two years to press government to shift the power plant to somewhere else, like Lobon chura of Khulna ! But neither of the governments (India & Bangladesh) are paying any interest or hearing to the real point of concern prevailing among the people of Bangladesh ! Moreover a private industry group named ORION has also started to establish another smaller power station nearby.

At this moment of utter significance, we must raise our protests and demands in support of the sanctity of the Sunderbans as well as ecology. So BAPA, Save the Sunderbans, Center for Human Rights Movements (CHRM), Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee and Green Voice are jointly organizing a Citizens’ Gather on October 5, 2012, Friday, at 10am. in front of the National Press Club, Topkhana Road, Dhaka demanding:” Stop Building Thermal Power Station in the Sunderbans! Shift it to another place away from this forest!! Stop Orion group from constructing another power station nearby!!!”
