Rajshahi University Chhatra League activist dies

A Rajshahi University student died on Monday 12 hours after he was shot during a gunfight between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League on the campus.

Sohel Rana, a BCL activist and a second year student of sociology department, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds in the head around 11:00am.

He succumbed to his injuries at 12:25pm, hospital sources said.

Two factions of BCL exchanged fire at Suhrawardy Hall and Madar Baksh Hall premises at about 12:15am Monday, leaving Sohel injured.

One BCL group was led by RU Chhatra League President Ahmed Ali and the other by its General Secretary Abu Hossain Bipu.

On information, police rushed to the campus after 12:30am and brought the situation under control.

Among the injured, Sohel was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the doctors referred him to neurology department of the DMCH.

Another BCL man Emran Hossain was injured during a chase and counter-chase between the two factions.

After the clash, members of law enforcing agencies conducted an overnight raid at the two halls but found nothing during the four-hour drive till 5:00am, reports our RU correspondent.

Campus sources said tension began between Ahmed Ali and Bipu after some of the supporters of Bipu joined the Ali’s group few days back.

Following the death of Sohel, additional police have been posted on the campus to avert further untoward incident.

Sohel was son of Abdullah Al Mamun of Saddia village in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur.
